I started when the lockdown in India began in mid-March since then I have experienced an overall positive change in my body. It feels like warm water has helped to restore my body for the better. I have clearer skin now because my pimples are almost gone. I barely have any stomach problems no matter what I’m eating. My digestion has improved a lot. Somehow the air feels fresher too, but I am sure that’s due to the global reduction of Air pollution. I didn’t know that something as basic as warm water could revive me from the inside. In Ayurveda, the concept of good health revolves around the balance of five elements, namely air, water, fire, earth, and space. The balance of these elements is disturbed when toxins from different sources start to build-up in the body. These toxins are collectively called Ama. Warm water helps in regulating the body’s balance by flushing out these toxins. What Are The Benefits? 1. Better Digestion As hot water is lighter, it helps to digest the food faster even if you eat junk food like, burgers or deep-fried chicken, or maybe good fat like ghee. Drinking lukewarm water before or in-between your meals activates the stomach juices. It breaks down the food better. 2. Boosts Metabolism Hot or warm water accelerates the metabolism of the body. It increases the heat in the body and stimulates hunger as well. The liver and intestines perform actively to remove the bio-toxins out of the body through urine. It improves the muscle tone which results in better peristaltic movement. 3. Weight Loss Generally, irregular eating habits and lifestyle choices slow down the body metabolism. This causes needless accumulation at the adipose tissue. As warm water increases the body metabolism, it stimulates the body to burn more calories during the day. It also prevents acidity and heartburn. 4. Body Detoxification Lack of water causes strain or bloating during the elimination process. Drinking warm water helps dissolve almost all kinds of impure substances, carry it along to eliminate it as waste. It also makes you sweat and flush out more toxins. Relieving Menstrual Cramps Women commonly use a hot water bottle and press it against your belly for relieving pain from menstrual cramps. Instead, warm water is better for instant relief, even for muscle spasms and headaches. The heat calms the abdominal muscles, increases blood flow to the skin, and loosen up the cramped muscles. 7. Checks Premature Aging The main reason for premature aging and illness, in general, is the accumulation of toxins in the body. Consuming warm water daily will remove the toxins, balance the blood circulation, correct your digestive system, and open your skin pores. Improves Hair Health If you have hair problems like dandruff, dry scalp, thin and rough hair, warm water is a one-stop solution. Clears Nasal And Throat Congestion Your itchy and sore throat can be relieved instantly by drinking warm water with honey at night. You can also gargle with warm water by adding a bit of salt in it. Cures Constipation and Better Bowel Movement Lack of water causes abdominal strain or bloating during the elimination process resulting in constipation. It can disrupt your bowel movement which build-sup toxins. Drinking a glass of hot or warm water on an empty stomach improves the muscle tone for better intestinal movement. The food and other remnants easily pass through with no pain. When To Drink? Being the universal solvent, water makes up 70 percent of the human body. And it turns out that most of our health problems can be regulated by water alone. In Ayurveda, the basic principle is to have a cup of warm water with your meals. Similar traditions can be seen in China and Japan, with small variations in flavors. If your meals have fluids like soup or yogurt, then you should drink a lesser amount of warm water than usual. How Much To Drink? It is important to know that the daily consumption of warm water depends on a variety of factors. Apart from age, weather, diet, and your energy levels, you need to know what kind of body constitution you have. Like pitta body types are thirstier than Kapha types.From the Ayurvedic perspective, body constitution is of three types of doshas or forces of nature, comprising of five elements in totality: Vata Dosha: consists of air and space Warm water for Vata body type:• Boil two liters of water for five minutes and switch off the heat• Add half teaspoon of fennel seed, a one-fourth teaspoon of marshmallow root, and 3 leaves of mint. Pitta Dosha: consists of fire and water Warm water for Pitta body type:• Boil two liters of water for two minutes and switch off the heat• Add one-fourth teaspoon of fennel seed, two rosebuds, and a clove Kapha Dosha: consists of water and earth Warm water for Kapha body type:• Boil two liters of water for five minutes and switch off the heat• Add half teaspoon of fennel seeds, one-fourth teaspoon of cumin, two thin slices of fresh ginger, 3 whole basil leaves When Not To Drink? After the intake of alcoholic beverages, one should not drink hot water.In the case of delirium, diarrhea, dizziness, or burning sensation, hot water needs to be avoided.If a person has a pitta (hot body) constitution, she or he needs to be careful with warm water consumption. “The ancient Indian tradition of yoga talks about balancing the fire and water elements, which symbolize the feminine & masculine energies and their polarities.
